The founder of the group is Tom Scholz who wrote songs, produced the albums, and played the guitar and keyboard. The only other member of the band to be signed by Epic record and help create the albums was Brad Delp. Other members were brought on to tour and make up an entire group. The two men created a lot of the songs in Scholz basement where he saved up money from his job at Polaroid to make a studio. Current band members include: Tom Scholz, Jeff Neal, Michael Sweet, Gary Pihl, Tommy DeCarlo, and Kimberley Dahme. However, the band used to consist of different members during the 1970s and 1980s.

The first album was released in 1976 and was self titled after the band’s name Boston. Two years later in 1978, they released their second album called Don’t Look Back. This album topped the number one position on the Billboard music charts, and the first made it to number three. It would be almost ten years later before they released a third album which also made it to number one. The album was titled Third Stage. There was another eight year span before another album was made. It made it to the number one position like the other albums, and was called Walk On. It was released in 1994 and didn’t do as well as the others and topped the charts at position seven. For the rest of the 1990s, Boston didn’t release any more albums. It wasn’t until 2002 that a fifth was made and called Corporate America.

They are classified under the music genres rock and hard rock. You have probably heard them on Internet Radio or radio stations that play classic rock. Not only are they masters at rock music, but they also incorporate heavy metal and progressive rock into their music. One of their most popular songs, “More Than A Feeling,” really demonstrates how great the band is, what they sound like, and shows an amazing vocal range by Brad Delp. Immediately following his performances in Turin, Mr. Doss will travel to Madrid, Spain where he will star as Jochanaan in a Teatro Real production of Salome through the end of April.

In September and October, Mr. Doss will once again take the stage as Jochanaan, this time in a Teatro del Maggio production in beautiful Florence, Italy.

Mr. Doss continues to be cast as Jochanaan by numerous opera companies around the world. Recent reviews have applauded his work in this role, noting both his strong vocal and physical presence. The Journal Sentinel lauded his “potent and steadfast bass-baritone sound” while a review of his work at Opera Regio Torino complimented his visual appeal, stating that “the idea to use a strong room as a cistern for the good looking Jochanaan by Mark Doss was a great one.”

In late December, Mr. Doss will return to Turin’s Teatro Regio Torino to perform as Klingsor in Parsifal. This opera is scheduled to run through early February 2011.

Mr. Doss has also been contracted for a return performance with the Canadian Opera Company (COC), the largest producer of opera in Canada and one of the largest in North America. Full details will be announced by the COC at the beginning of 2011.

When he is not touring the world, Mr. Doss divides his time between Toronto, Canada and his Pennsylvania residence.

Most of us can remember the first time we heard one of our favorite (or not so favorite) songs coming from someone’s pocket or purse and realized it was their cell phone alerting them to an incoming call or text. Many see that moment as the moment peace and quiet died: the moment digital devices went too far. The rest of us recognized it as a sign that technology was finally allowing music the presence in our lives we had always desired it to have. Music conveys emotions in ways words can only dream of.

When I found out that calls from friends no longer had to be announced by some cheesy MIDI tune, I was so excited that I was willing to pay to use songs I already owned as ringtones. It didn’t hit me that I was getting ripped off until I started realizing that the ringtones I was buying were not even songs that I genuinely loved, but simply the best stuff available. Even now I shudder at the thought of some of the over-played radio hits I used back then. Ok, I thought, so technology is pretty amazing; surely there is some way around this, some way to use the songs I love and have already paid for. So I talked to some of my more technologically inclined friends and discovered that there are a few ways to do it yourself. However, the process was somewhat complicated and time-consuming, and we lost interest after a few songs.

Nowadays, there is a much larger selection of songs available as ringtones, as well as a multitude of make-your-own-ringtone websites, but until recently most of the above cost money, even if you owned the song from which you were creating a ringtone. iTunes’ ringtone creation program for the iPhone is probably the worst, because it requires you to purchase the song from iTunes AND to pay for its conversion into a ringtone. However, the other day I was surfing the Web and randomly came across this site called Mad Ringtones.

Not only is the use of this site free, but the control it gives you over the creation of your ringtones is unlike anything I have ever seen. Not only can you decide the length of your ringtone clip, but you can choose to cut entire portions of the song out, allowing you to make your own comical remixes of songs, skip annoying verses, whatever. And the speed is amazing. Literally, in a few minutes you can turn any sound file into a ringtone that works on virtually any phone.
