It’s barely a month after hitting heaters, “Avatar” is Poised to Overtake ‘Titanic’ and become the highest-grossing movie in the history.

The estimated world-wide tally for the Twentieth Century Fox science-fiction epic was just $2 million shy of the total posted in 1997 by “Titanic”—the previous feature film directed by Mr. Cameron. Sunday, the estimated global take for “Avatar” was $1.841 billion, compared with the $1.843 billion that “Titanic” earned over the course of about 10 months.

Twentieth Century Fox is owned by News Corp, which also owns The Wall Street Journal.

Given that “Avatar” grosses well over $2 million in the U.S. alone on most weekdays, the film appeared certain to surpass the previous worldwide record holder on Monday.

With $36 million in estimated domestic ticket sales this weekend, the futuristic action flick was No. 1 at the U.S. box office for the sixth weekend in a row, for a total of $552.8 million.
The movie, which uses modern 3-D technology, went home with trophies for best drama and best director at last week’s Golden Globe awards. If it is among the 10 nominees for Best Picture when the Oscar lists are unveiled Feb. 2, the coming Academy Awards could help boost the movie far beyond the $601 million posted by “Titanic” domestically.

In addition to the sales lift provided by the premium price attached to 3-D tickets, “Avatar” has been propelled to its current position by positive reviews and strong word-of-mouth buzz.
Its mid-December opening weekend saw strong, but far from record-breaking, domestic sales of $77 million-in line with forecasts based on the film’s performance in “tracking” surveys. But in an environment in which a 50% week-over-week decline is considered a strong showing, “Avatar” saw almost no decline in sales through the Christmas and New Year’s weekends. The strength of the film’s momentum became clear the first weekend after the holiday season: Domestic receipts dipped just 29%, and it became obvious that “Avatar” was set to shatter records.

But the problem is “Avatar” are shown worse on DVD than their 2-D counterparts, so it can’t be widespread enough.

This movie is really amazing and so special with the perfect 3D technology. However, I must say that “Avatar” can’t overtake the position of “Titanic” in my heart and I just don’t know why, maybe I like the story much more. Anyway the beautiful pictures won’t stay longer in the mind than the true emotion are.

The movie, From Paris With Love, takes place mostly in France, where a terrorist attack looks to be unfolding very soon.  A young low ranking intelligence officer, played by Johnathan Meyers,  that works in the office of the ambassador to France ends up getting paired up with John Travolta to help stop this attack before it happens.  Travolta doesn’t really always do things by the book, and it makes for a very entertaining two hours.  As you can imagine there are lots of explosions, bullets flying, and car chases.  It really is am entertaining movie that I highly recommend!

In some Asian countries, such as India, Korea and Vietnam, when a child loses a tooth the usual custom is that he or she should throw it onto the roof if it came from the lower jaw, or into the space beneath the floor if it came from the upper jaw. While doing this, the child shouts a request for the tooth to be replaced with the tooth of a mouse. This tradition is based on the fact that the teeth of mice go on growing for their whole life, a characteristic of all rodents. In Japan, a different variation calls for lost upper teeth to be thrown straight down to the ground and lower teeth straight up into the air; the idea is that incoming teeth will grow in straight.[citation needed]

In parts of India, young children offer their discarded baby tooth to the sun, sometimes wrapped in a tiny rag of cotton turf[clarification needed].

The Tooth Fairy is less common in African cultures.

Rosemary Wells, a former professor at the Northwestern University Dental School, found evidence that supports the origin of different tooth fairies in the United States around 1900. Folklorist Tad Tuleja suggests postwar affluence, a child-directed family culture, and media turned the myth into a custom. The Tooth Fairy, a three-act playlet for children by Esther Watkins Arnold, was published in 1927. On May 28, 1938, MGM released The Little Rascals short entitled, The Awful Tooth, in which the gang agreed to pull their teeth out to make money from the tooth fairy.[3] A reference in American literature appears in the 1949 book, “The Tooth Fairy” by Lee Rothgow. Dr. Wells created a Tooth Fairy Museum in 1993 in her Deerfield, Illinois museum. In a March 1961 Peanuts strip, the new character Frieda asks if the prices are set by the American Dental Society. The Tooth Fairy has appeared in several children’s books, an adult book, and films, and the eponymous radio series.

A somewhat similar practice is found in Guatemala, where worry dolls are told a worry by children and placed under their pillow. During the night the doll is believed to worry so that the child can sleep, and sometimes to actually address or resolve the worry. As with the tooth fairy, parents may remove the doll at night to reinforce the child’s belief in the myth.
