Friday, July 31st, 2009

We all know about camping in summer or spring when the weather is warm, have you been camping in winter. Obviously the main thing you have to do is prepare for the cold weather and a big bonus is it’s too cold for flies.

Your camping equipment will need to suitable for the conditions. The  main things you need are a sleeping bag, tent, warm clothing and food and drinks.

  • Sleeping bags are rated so you can choose the one that’s suits the conditions. Whether you are going to be camping in average winter temperatures or in the mountains surrounded by snow. Choose one that is roomy enough for extra clothing.
  • Using a tent that is suitable is very important as this is your shelter. Choose one that is stronger and well constructed for these temperatures and conditions. The tent material, guy ropes and poles must be extra strong and able to with stand extreme windy conditions.
  • Your clothing must be suitable. Depending on what conditions you are camping in. Thermal clothing is an option in extreme conditions under your normal clothes. Waterproof boots, pants and a waterproof jacket are essential to keep warm and dry. Wearing layers is the best way, have a jacket that will be large enough to cover several layers of clothing.
  • Pack enough food and drink with a few extras and a lighter or matches for the campfire or take a stove.

Take extra care preparing for your winter camping and have a great time. Enjoy the uniqueness of being outdoors this time of the year, take plenty of photos as the scenery will be spectacular and very different to warm weather camping.

Thursday, July 30th, 2009

We all like to be comfortable and have everything required when we go camping and take those little extra things to make a difference. Here is some ideas that may help, use this list  as a guide. Probably you are taking some of these items already. There maybe something on this list that you will find useful. and add it to your camping kit for next time.

Binoculars   Compass (so there is no debate about which way is N S E W)

Hand towel   Chux   Disposable wipes   Paper towel

Collapsible bucket instead of taking a plastic bucket

Small shovel for moving hot coals or digging eg. bush toilet

Small rake for clearing camping site

Toiletries - everyone has own bag, toothpaste, shampoos etc

Toilet paper - not always available at campsites

Heat proof glove or thick towel for removing cooking pots from campfire

Instructions for tent or equipment if it’s new

Small table to use for snacks, drinks and games

Torch for each person

Rubber backed Picnic Rug

A large strong metal bucket or similar filled with water put next to the campfire and you will always have warm water for washing.

A good thing to do is to keep as much of your camping equipment together at home, so it is much easier each time you prepare to go camping. Each time you go camping add something to your camping kit, so you are not using your everyday items from your home  eg.  go to a bargain shop and buy some cheap cutlery, plates cups and put them in your camping kit. Over a few years you will have a complete spare of everything ready to go anytime.

Have you forgotten to take something important when you have gone camping or have a suggestion to add to this list for other campers?

Thursday, July 30th, 2009

Hiking is a great way to get exercise and a fun way to enjoy nature. Stay on the marked tracks or trails, get a map if you can. There are a few tips you should do before leaving to make your walk safer and more enjoyable. A hiking checklist is also included to use as a guide. For a day hike. pack your backpack with suitable equipment, depending on the type of terrain and weather conditions. Take plenty of water and food, like fruit, energy bars, lunch etc. Take a small first aid kit with bandaids, bandages, insect repellent, pain relief tablets, sun cream, a sun hat or beanie, sunglasses etc. Wear appropriate clothing, short or long pants, shirt and a jumper if required.

Wear comfortable hiking boots or runners for a short hike and wear thick socks to cushion your feet as you walk and climb. Remember it can rain when you don’t expect it at least take a disposable poncho if you don’t want to carry waterproofs.

If you are going for more than a day you will need a lot more equipment use the checklist below as a guide.

Hiking Checklist

Water and Food – Fruit, energy snacks, dehydrated meals and meat etc

Must Haves - Sunglasses, LED torch and spare batteries, pocket multi tool, matches in waterproof container, compass, whistle, maps, extra clothes, raingear if required,

Shelter & Bedding – Tent, sleeping bag and foam mat

Before you leave notify a responsible person and if you are in a National Park notify the Ranger or Park staff of your intended hike. Tips For Planning Camp Cooking

Wednesday, July 29th, 2009

Do your camp cooking planning before you go camping and have your meals, food, utensils organised. So you don’t get there and wonder what each meal will be and realise you have left some food or important utensils behind. Here are a few tips and ideas.

Plan your meals – For example if you are staying for a long weekend work out how many meals you will need to provide for. Then take the appropriate food required for each breakfast lunch and dinner.

Keep Meals Simple – Keep all or most of your meals easy to prepare, cook and to clean up. No need to make restaurant 3 course meals.

Cooking equipment – Check if you will have a campfire, barbeque or using the camp stove. Take the cooking equipment required to suit the food that you are cooking or preparing, Do you need a frypan, saucepan, tongs, camp oven etc.

Food – Work out what ingredients you need and only take the food required for your meals. Don’t take five different types of sauce if you are only going to use two or don’t take kilo of rice if you only need 1 cup. You have limited space so make the most of it.

Camping makes you hungry – When deciding how much food to take allow a bit extra for each meal, add a few more sausages, or eggs etc.

Experiment – You may like to test out a new recipe and try a new meal or dessert each time you go camping too make it more interesting. If it’s a success that’s great, you may like to add it to the menu next time you go camping.

These are ideas I use each time we go camping so there is enough food for everyone, without having wasted leftovers when we get home. Make your meals tasty, but easy to prepare and wash up and everyone will have a great time. A wash up time saver is to use  a paper plate over a sturdy plastic plate for the main meal, saves washing up a greasy or messy plate.

Have you tried a new camping recipe lately?
