Moving to Sydney in a couple months - should I bring my canoe?

I am moving to Sydney in a couple months from right now, from the United States, and will be living there for 2 years as my company is relocating me. I’m not 100% sure where I’ll be living, but I am thinking Manly, as I want to be close to the beach!
I was wondering if it was worth it to buy a hybrid canoe/kayak from my friend’s company and ship it out to Sydney. My company is paying to ship my stuff out, and there is enough room in my shipping container to put my canoe in, if I choose.
However, I was wondering if it is common for people to canoe along the coast of Sydney nearby the all the beaches and/or the harbor, in their own personal canoe/kayak? Are there any restrictions as to where/when people can canoe or kayak in Sydney? Do people have to get permits to be able to do so? Is it safe to canoe or kayak along the beaches in the ocean water and/or the harbor, or is it a little bit dangerous due to the traffic of ferries and commercial boats, rough waters, or the possibility of sharks? Is there anything else that I should know, in regards to owning a canoe out in Sydney?
