Linings play a very important role in creating window coverings.   The lining role is much more than for cosmetic purposes.   They can act an insulator creating thermal curtains.  They can also act as a shield from the light creating blackout curtains.  And finally they can act as a sound barrier creating insulating curtains.  Whatever your needs may be, lining will make the difference when selecting your window coverings.

Blackout curtains are created when blackout lining is used to line your drapery panels.  You can opt for 100% blackout linings, or you can get a 50% dim out lining.  Both linings will provide sufficient blockage of the sun.  The 100% blackout will prevent all sun from shinning through your window.  The 50% dim-out lining, also known as suede lining, will only dim the sunlight from your window.  However, it will be more protection from the sun than traditional sateen or cotton linings.  This will not only prevent sunlight from shining through your windows, it will also help protect your fabric from UV Rays.  This is very important for finer fabrics, such as silk, which would completely rot from the sun within a matter of a year or two without proper lining.

Thermal curtains or insulated curtains are created when you add a very heavy interlining in between your curtain and your lining.   A thick flannel interlining will help preserve the life of your drapery panels.  They will also give them a plush full look.  In addition to those wonder features, they will help block the heat and the cold in your windows.   A heavy English bump interlining will keep noise as well as the heat in the summer and the cold air in the winter

I miss them because they were my “first”. Today I have sconces on my walls - but in a twist of fate I decided to go non-electric! It started out innocently enough…

I’d decided to go all-out for an anniversary with my Significant Other, and wanted to try my hand at romance. Now, romance isn’t something that comes naturally to me so I did a little research and turned first to candles.

Obvious and easy choice, but I was concerned about the safety factor. After all, I planned to have those candles burning at a time I wouldn’t be paying any attention to them. And you guessed it: that’s when I discovered wall sconces for candles! Not only are they a safe alternative to candles sitting on flat surfaces but they’re also permanent – you can be romantic any time. (Did you know you can get silk rose petals to scatter for those special anniversaries?)

So that’s what started it. The next set of sconces was premeditated: when I was looking for sconces to match our bedroom décor I found these really crazy, really cool sconces and couldn’t forget them. I started looking around the house for a place they’d look great - so of course they’re hanging right there in the downstairs bath. (Did you know burning candles eliminates unpleasant bathroom odors?)

Then we had this great Mystery Party – you know, everyone comes in costume, plays out a mystery and guests have to guess who the villain is. We wanted “mysterious” candle lighting at the front entry, but without the danger of lighting a guest’s costume on fire. Enter more wall candle wall sconces! We love the lighting so much we use them all the time when we’re expecting guests.

Of course the dogs were responsible for the next wall sconce purchase. They love spending evenings with us on the deck, but those tails are dangerous! We were having so much fun with our other new wall sconces we decided to put them on the deck too, and now enjoy lit candles well out of the reach of those wagging tails.

Our neighbors caught the wall sconce craze and they’ve even attached some to trees in their yard – well below any branches of course!

We’re not sure where the next wall sconce location will be, but we’re keeping our options open. I just saw some candle sconces done in a mosaic that would look great somewhere…

Remodeling any part of your home is intimidating. The jargon used for kitchen decor may not be used for living room decor or bathroom decor. However, all of the hardware shops and interior design magazines seem to think that everyone is Martha Stewart and automatically popped out of the womb being able to decipher such phrases as “rustic bathroom decor”. And you don’t want to be an idiot and admit that you don’t know what they are prattling on about.

Think “Log Cabin”

No, not the pancake syrup but an actual log cabin that Abraham Lincoln was supposed to have built in. The type of housing that termites preach is where good termites go when they die. A home made of split and notched logs that a fireplace is then stuck inside of. Although real log cabins are passe, rustic cabins are hip and trendy. So, when someone starts going on about rustic bathroom decor, they really mean that they want to make your bathroom look like it’s in a log cabin.

What About The Logical Inconsistency?

It’s not good pointing out that people who live in log cabins or “rustic cabins” do not have indoor bathrooms to be the recipient of a rustic bathroom decor design. Log cabins had to be as small as possible in order to be warmed and to not destroy all of the trees in the area. This means that indoor bathrooms were not included.

When you had to go, you went outside and squatted or you went to an outhouse. Outhouses were not very glamorous and about as wide as a Port-o-Potty. Considering that there was no lighting, a huge hole with human waste at the bottom which drew an amazing amount of insects, it’s not surprising that some log cabin dwellers preferred to squat outdoors in all weathers.

People who make their living of interior design really have problems with history lessons. It’s not their job to be accurate or event to make sense - their job is to make you happy and have a working home. If that means inventing things like rustic bathroom decor, so be it.

What It Looks Like

Rustic bathroom decor involves dark earth tones and patterns of things like pine cones, tree leaves and bear tracks. The medicine cabinet could look as if it was carved out of a solid piece of wood. The knobs on your sink might look like acorns.  Your wallpaper might perfectly mimic Lincoln Logs. Be afraid. Be very afraid.
