In any part of the country I have been, shelters have direct contact to Irish Wolfhound rescues. The members of the rescue organization will take a Wolfhound and place it in a good home them as soon as one appears in a shelter. For Irish Wolfhounds, contacting the local rescue organization makes more sense that contacting shelters.

Rescues are a great place to get a very grateful dog. The problem is that, for Irish Wolfhound rescues, you can wait a long, long time for a dog to become available.

I’d steer clear of a veterinarian too. In the US, a good place to start is the AKC website: it will identify contacts through which you can find breeders. Attend shows and specialties. Get to know the breeders; listen to the discussion among owners, and then make your decision. Keep in mind that the best Irish Wolfhound breeders will make it difficult for you to get a dog: they care about the breed more than what you might be willing to pay them. Pick a quality breeder!

a vet is a horrible place to get information on buying a puppy.. find a reputable breeder. Most vets know jack all about each breed of dog.

Agreed. I volunteer for a shelter and hear every excuse in the book for relinquishing animals. And we have many pure-breds too.

Haven’t you noticed how out detached from reality ppl are these days? I take my dog to a dog park with a pond. It is amazing to me,how many ppl yell specific commands at puppies. Yanking them by the leash trying to get the puppy to heal. Iask them why they want the dog to heal any way, and they look dumbfounded. I tell most ppl that there is no way most breeds will understand how to heel.But they continue yanking the dogs neck.I wanna beat the **** out of them

I totally agree with you.
I’ve seen people “returning” their dogs as if they were shoes! That’s insane! If you get a dog, you should keep it and take care of it.
People should be more responsible about animals.
And yes, animal shelters are always the best choice.

If you want a certain breed then it is possable to still adopt. why not get one from a local wolfhound rescue. They rescue wolfhounds from people who abandon them or didn’t know what hey were getting in to. It is a easy as checking the net or checking your state’s local listings. If you don’t want to go to a lot of trouble why not just pick up a perfectly good dog at your shelter. Either way your going to be giving a home to a dog who really needs one.
